2 out of 5 stars What's With All the 5 Star Reviews......   June 16, 2010
R. Salto (Grand Prairie, TX)
I bought this game based after reading the above reviews and I'm wondering if I was playing the same game as they did. WHAT A PIECE OF JUNK THIS GAME IS!

GRAPHICS: It's like a PS2 game, period.
GAMEPLAY: It was the high point of the game, but grew very tiresome and repetitive very quickly.
STORY: What story ! Jumbled mess. Dialogue was atrocious.
MISC: the voice-actor of Spidey needs to be replaced, it was the most annoying part of the game I thought.

I really did want to like this game but I believe that Activision did gamers and Spidey fans alike a great dis-service by putting out a seemingly rushed, unpolished title. TRULY DISSAPOINTED. If you want a fun 'superhero' sandbox=type game, I would highly recommend INFAMOUS. Now there's an awesome game. Don't waste your money on this.

5 out of 5 stars Punching out senior citizens: One of Spidey's greatest strengths   May 27, 2010
Kit (New York, NY)
2 out of 2 found this review helpful

It's been a year since I've completed this game, and I always find myself coming back for more. Why? Because this is, arguably, one of the best Spider-Man games out there.

Let's face it: A game needs to have, essentially, three very important components that must be fulfilled in order to be good. These are: Fun Factor, Visuals, and Replayability. Everything else is negotiable.

Fun Factor: Spades. SPADES. You are Spider-Man - "Spidey", as you'll come to affectionately call him even though he'll look at you weird for doing it. As Spidey, you will be given access to a truckload of abilities and different ways of utilizing said abilities. First and foremost, you have the choice of choosing between regular "I'm a nice guy" Red and Blue Spider-Man, or the symbiote loving "I'm still a nice guy but with tentacles!" Black Symbiote Spider-Man. You can switch between either costume on the fly, and this is cool because each aspect of our arachnoid friend comes with its own merits. Merits such as separate movesets. With the ol' Red & Blue, you'll find that Spidey punches things faster, his aim is slightly more accurate, and he'll be less inclined to do collateral damage. The opposite is true with Black Symbiote Webhead - he's less afraid to get rough, more happy to slap his victims around, and, as inherit in all guys, just wanna break things into pieces once in a while. Nothing wrong with that. Now, the fun is in unlocking these abilities, and then mix and matching the techniques on the fly to create really awesome looking visuals as you clobber thugs, aliens, and hot chicks in black leathery spandex. That's right, chicks. Plural. Speaking of that, the boss fights are epic. EPIC. With your grand arsenal of moves, you'll find yourself pulling all sorts of crazy Spider-Man tricks and maneuvers on foes big and small that you wish were possible in the older games and possibly in real life (hey, I won't judge if you won't!). Perhaps the best and most memorable is the Vulture boss fight, where the entire battle takes place in the sky and Spidey must bounce between one Vulture minion to another to get to the bird man, while simultaneously keeping himself airborne. You have to play it to seriously appreciate what Spider-Man is now capable of.

Visuals: I love the art direction - Spidey and the world around him almost look like a mesh of cell-shading and oil painting. Yes, that's a very rough description, but there it is. The city of New York is also much less generic than depicted in the Spider-Man 2, 3, and Ultimate video games, which is great when you just wanna free roam and swing around to observe the chaos. Chaos? Oh yes, as you and your fashion-indecisive friend advance throughout the story, the borough of Manhattan will change with it - buildings will have permanent damage, the sky will begin to maintain an ominous dark blue hue, and the general feel of the world will go from "Yay, I'm happy and alive!" to "Man, I just wanna put my face in dirty bathwater for 10 whole minutes." The graphics adequately capture the mood of the city as it tries to fend itself from the alien symbiote invasion, and boy, does it do a great job.

Replayability: Oh yeah, it's there. Once you've unlocked all of your moves from both the Red & Blue and the Black Symbiote sides of Spidey, you'll want to do a second run to try their effectiveness on bosses that missed out on your full arachnoid capabilities during your initial play. That's right, New Game+ exists and all of your moves carry over to the next game. As if that isn't enough incentive, there are multiple endings to the story, and there are many points in the game where you must make choices that will take you to these endings. Or at least give you the chance to catch certain cut scenes you might have missed out on because you chose the other option. Win win all around.

"Spider-Man: Web of Shadows" is a great game. Don't let the naysayers fool you - if you love Spider-Man (whether in his original comics form, his 90's "Voiced by movie Greg Brady" cartoon form, his Tobey McGuire form, his fancy smancy MTV hipster form, or even the younger Spectacular cartoon form) and you want to see what Spidey can actually *do* in a video game, this is the one for you. And guess what, time is on your side. For the low entry price of no more than $30 bucks, there is no possible way you can go wrong with the purchase. Buy it, experience it, relive it.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT GAME   May 22, 2010
K. Pring (Middletown, IN USA)
I have to say, as soon as I got used to the controls they became the game I would play for hours on end and never get bored. This is by far the best Spiderman game ever! Not only can you change between red and black spidy instantaniously to unlease different powerful attacks but you can also summon aid, take out many, many thuds, or if you want to go to the dark side, cause as much rampend destruction as a spiderman can. The only beef I had with this game was on the smaller systems, the Wii, for example there is an option to get new and different suits as well as go on different quests and meet new people. Not necessarily a bad thing, to be honest, but I hate in when I want to see a character or get into a costume as spidy (as I did in the earliest spiderman games) and not be able too.

Overall, still, a wonderful value.
Thanks for reading.

5 out of 5 stars Son loves it!   April 19, 2010
Robert D. Howard (Selma, Al.)

4 out of 5 stars Fans will love it!!!!   March 24, 2010
Sebastian (USA)
PROS:
-Spidey fans will love it since it keeps the roots of the comic filled with spidey history trivia and familiar faces
-great story and plot you choose the side you want (red or black spidey) the story doesn't change much but the plot is stil very interesting.
-Beautiful graphics, the city looks amazing and so filled with detail, also as the game progresses the city changes too great plus and there's a night to day effect on it.
-great web swing action, is fun fast and as you collect more points it gets better, best so far as compared to the previous spidey games
-great fighting, you fight and feel like spider-man with really cool moves and also different moves for the black suited spidey, there's air combat, ground combat and even on-the-wall combat or even all over the place, you can fight an enemy with no "staged" feeling you'ree free to kick him wherever u wish.
-funny much of the dialogue is actually very entertaining!
-great creativity, since the plot has to do with venom taking ovet the city enemies change to a "venom" version of themselves which in they look awesome.
-you are free to explore the city
-fans will love the detail and little clues of spidey history

CONS:
-Voice acting sucks.
-Kinda repetitive
-some glitches
-camera can be very hard to control especially on on-wall combat
-somewhat easy if you catch the mood of it since most of the gameplay like battles or scenes is timing.
-the biggest dissapointment for me was the fact that once you beat the game you can't go back to the city, the game just finishes and takes u to the main menu and if you load the game again it just shows you the ending credits again and takes you back AGAIN to the main menu, so you pretty much will have to start over and loose all the points and unlockable combos you got... to avoid this right before you beat the game save manually the game before you face venom. that way you just can load from that point, altho ur stuck with alien invaded manhattan and not the regular one....

Overall the fun playtime and the fun battles kinda overthrows the bad stuff of the game, if they would have fixed this very small issues this gae will be a 100!

Overall I give it 4 stars!!! great game!
