Complete immersion in the world of Rapture April 2, 2010 J. Defreitas (Tampa, FL. USA) In a word: Fun!
In a sentence: Just as engrossing as the Bioshock 1, albeit it took a longer time for me to get sucked in, and for some reason I didn't think the graphics were as good as the 2007 version.
In a paragraph: This follow up work is very well done, why is that? It's story driven, you care about what happens, and you feel a desire to bring some order to a disorderly world. The story seems a little too familiar though. I am not sure how you change the story to make it feel fresh and new but a little more work here would have been made it more intoxicating. The idea of setting up traps to give yourself a chance while she's collecting ADAM is a lot of fun, the protect element is a great new component for this game. They have created an extension of an old world that does do justice to the original Bioshock series and I feel that this game will certainly allow for a continuation of the series.
Where they could improve: Towards the end of the game collecting ADAM seems redundant, they must find a way for collecting Adam to be as rewarding as it is in the beginning, never really felt any of my non-splicing weapons did very much damage. I also felt that playing as the big daddy that I was actually more susceptible to dying than in the first game when I didn't have a suit of Iron around me, very puzzled on this one???
Final Summation: If you liked the first one you will like this one, but I would recommend you pick up the first Bioshock game and play it first because it makes better sense story wise to do so, while not necessary, it sure would bring clarity to a lot of the comments made through out the game.
builds on an already great game March 31, 2010 Iris of the light (Costa Rica) The storyline is as messed up as the first bioshock... in the good sense of messed up. playing as a big daddy was something that was barely touched upon in the first game and i was pleased that it was the main feature for this game.
Fantastic March 29, 2010 James A. Hall (USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This game is by far one of the most interesting stories and enjoyable games out right now. You don't have to have played Bioshock to understand two. But it really does help and furthers your enjoyment in the story. It is filled with neat little add ons to the first game to blow your mind. I recommend for "maximum mind blowing" experience, to play Bioshock 1 and then this one.
A step down March 24, 2010 Sidney Carton (Edinburgh, United Kingdom) 2 out of 6 found this review helpful
Bioshock was above all a story-driven game. Average controls were easily overlooked when presented with a stellar soundtrack, great characters, fantastic writing, and an amazing and gorgeous environment.
Bioshock 2 is a real wasted opportunity to improve on an incredible game. Marginally improved gameplay doesn't excuse a vastly inferior story and it certainly does not excuse the very obvious downgrade in texture quality. What were they thinking? The hyped underwater sections "exploring the ocean outside Rapture" do nothing of the sort. They are restricted, linear walkways to the next indoor section.
I wish they had just tacked the same gameplay improvements onto the original Bioshock, given you the option of which hacking game you wanted (or a nice mix of both), and improved the framerate on the original. They could have released it as a Special Edition. Bioshock 2's framerate is noticeably faster on the PS3 version-- I noticed lots of clipping on the first Bioshock.
This is a story driven series, and nearly every aspect of the story in the first game was much better thought out (see J. Harmony's review). Ken Levine's absence proved to really hurt the series. Garry Schyman's music work here is weaker.
Also --- I can't BELIEVE I had to wait 20 minutes AGAIN to install Bioshock 2. You'd think 2K would have at least corrected that after having made the same mistake with the first game.
Overall I can't recommend Bioshock 2. After three hours of gameplay, I'm not even sure I'll bother finishing it. And who wants to play Bioshock multiplayer when MW2 and BC2 are infinitely better online shooters? The controls (also unchanged) feel like I'm still playing a PS2 shooter.
At least we can look forward to the next big release from Irrational Games. In the meantime, I'll be playing the first Bioshock again from the beginning, and pretend this sequel was never made.
Tougher than the first March 24, 2010 game play addict (U.S.A.) The game is tougher than the first especially when you have to protect the little sister while she is drawing out the plasma.
The game play and environment takes place in a similar environment as the first Bioshock.
Overall, much has been written about the game. I really enjoyed Bioshock 1 and still have it on my shelf. I'm 3/4 of the way done with the single player mode of Bioshock 2 and so far I'm having fun with it. I'm certain I will play this again two more times in addition to trying out the online play. Again, in my opinion this game is more challenging.
Its a game worth buying and playing. As others stated, if you haven't played the first one yet, do that first.
