5 out of 5 stars Easily one of the best games I've ever played   June 8, 2010
Helmez R. Rivera (Miami, FL)
In terms of graphics, sound design, gameplay, story, and replayability, the game is nearly flawless. Issues with it have been stated before, mostly in the load times and when you first install the game it takes a while. The intense graphics really push the system as the harddrive and blu-ray are almost in a constant state of use. Get used to seeing the yellow activity light.

Like I said before it's easily one of the best games I've ever played. The story just sucks you in and there's no really no right or wrong way to play it. You make decisions and you have to live with it and while you can go back and replay a chapter and change the outcome, I found that I just wanted to keep going to see how those choices would play out.

A fantastic game and I really hope for more in terms of DLC and hopefully some sequels or something similar.

4 out of 5 stars Heavy Story   June 3, 2010

Heavy Rain is dark. And I don't just mean because it's raining constantly. The storyline is about drowned kids and the hunt for a serial killer. Cheery. Toss in terrible parenting skills, flawed characters, crappy homes, a bunch of weirdos and horribly gruesome death scenes, you've got yourself a video game.

You play as four different characters, which are all seriously flawed. Ethan Mars, the rather whiney father that managed to lose not one but two of his kids. I doubt I would hire him as a babysitter. Norman Jayden (pronounced Nahman) the FBI agent that manages to irritate just about everyone with his Boston accent and crazy sunglasses that he sports in the dark and yet, no one ever mentions it. He also happens to have a drug problem. Madison Paige, the motorcycle-riding journalist that just happens to have a thing for Ethan and struts around like a stripper. She also has unexplained nightmares of masked men breaking into her home to murder her. Charming, truly. Scott Shelby, the aging, paunchy private eye that is the most likable character of them all. Well, for a while at least. Now, you do meet a few other characters, mostly stereotypical and mostly annoying. Mad Jack, Paco and Blake come to mind but mostly Lauren I am looking at you. These flaws make the main characters more realistic and if you do something that leads to their death, and believe me you can, you actually feel bad. Case in point, I got distracted by chip dip which led to the unfortunate demise of Madison at the hands of the sadistic doctor. It was truly gruesome and horrible. Once I snapped my jaw shut, I replayed the chapter because well, I kind of missed her.

Now, don't get me wrong, Heavy Rain has it's fair share of flaws. The first couple of hours of the game are slow to say the least and the prologue is so boring it's actually painful. It gets much better as you move along but certain chapters still drag down the momentum. Load times for a game of this nature are slow and while admiring the facial capture program may be interesting the first few times, it gets old quickly. Voice acting is hit or miss. Hearing Ethan's deadpan "JASON!" while trekking through the mall, will leave your thumb off the X button permanently. While the graphics look very good, the movement of the characters can appear wooden and switching camera angles often leaves your character walking around in choppy little circles or staring at walls. The characters still suffer from blocky, meaty looking hands and weird facial expressions or lack thereof. There are also a few incidents when the rain effects continue even when you are inside. Yes, despite the fact that Madison is sitting on a couch in a living room, there are still raindrops bouncing off her jacket. I knew that girl had a dark cloud hanging over her. Also, as good as the backdrops are, you are limited to what you can interact with. We don't want you getting off storyline now do we?

This is not an action game so for those ripping the game to shreds due to game play, you should have done some research first. The game play is comprised of tons of cut scenes. There is no hacking and slashing to be found. Personally, I didn't mind it at all but there was this little game called Indigo Prophesy a few years back that made me discover the joy of NOT hacking and slashing everything and this is the natural and much improved progression of the genre. Still, the QTE does leave a bit to be desired at times. The fighting scenes are not fluid no matter how quickly you hit the buttons and for the love of God, can we please allow the option of RUNNING? Oddly, there seems to be no real hurry in Heavy Rain, despite the desperate search for Shaun Mars who is up to his chin in rainwater.

The game relies on player choices. Your decisions directly effect the outcome and while there are 7 basic endings, there are over twenty variations. Each play through is likely to change the outcome based on your ability to collect information, solve simple puzzles and ask the right questions. If you don't find or complete something, the game remembers it and you'll just have to do without. There are a few plot holes and characters that just pop up to offer exposition at just the right moment but overall they don't detract from the story. The game also misleads you to the point of blatant lies that are not so convincingly explained away during a flashback sequence yet still we somehow overlook it in the name of gaming.

The story is mostly solid and will keep you engaged (after that dreadful prologue and first few chapters) right up to the end. You get attached to the characters and want them to succeed. When they die it's usually a gruesome and horribly violent death that will probably leave your jaw hanging. Once dead, they are gone for good, there is no convenient respawing area or magical spell that will revive them. The chapters are quite manageable and you can replay them at any time though back tracking can change the outcome. There are trophies to be had for completing certain quests though some seem tossed in there for no real reason...I get a trophy for watching the opening credits? Really? The difficulty level is rather easy and changing it to a harder setting doesn't really do much except give you a shorter window to respond in most cases.

Bottom line, if you only like hack and slash, action or FPS games this is probably not for you. If you like RPG games, you still may not like this as there is no level up system and try as you might, you will never learn a magical spell or become a member of the Thieving Elven Moose Clan. If you like story driven games, where decisions matter this one plays like an interactive movie and you'll want to see the end, whichever end that may be.

4 out of 5 stars The fresh smell of Heavy Rain..   June 3, 2010

The re-playability is moderate. The game seems glitchy and load times are slow but I would highly recommend this game. A complaint of mine would be not being able to skip through dialog when replaying. Also the outcomes aren't significantly different when choosing different decisions within the characters when replaying the game. Definitely an adult oriented game but I'd say its worth it.

5 out of 5 stars Love IT!   June 2, 2010

This game is definitely worth the buy... I am not much of a video gamer but this is more like a movie where you are in control of the outcomes!
